The Perfect Concealer Brush

While I was shopping for a concealer the other day I was introduced to a new brush. It was Sephora's Classic Perfection Concealer Brush #20.

The sales girl at Sephora was showing me several concealers and I allowed her to demonstrate how well they worked on my under eye area. Instead of grabbing a makeup applicator she grabs this brush. Wow! The application was gentle, amazingly blended and the concealers (specifically Make Up For Ever's HD Invisible Cover Concealer for $29) were outstanding. "I have got to get this brush", was repeated over and over in my head.... then the practical side of me spoke up with, "I wonder if I already have a similar brush at home...."

Amazingly enough I did have a very similar brush. In fact I have two. "Oh, but is it really the same", I asked and then I tried using it with wetted powdered foundation. I was shocked to find the results were outstanding.

The major difference in the two brushes is not in how they work but in what they are made from. The #20 is a synthetic brush and was so easy to clean. When we were jumping from one concealer to another the girl simply pumped some alcohol onto a cleaning pad and wiped the concealer off the brush, then on to the next brand/color. My brushes have natural bristles and are cleaned with a mild soap or shampoo, rinsed well and take about a day to dry. This experience has given me a whole new appreciation for synthetics.

So I guess that I don't actually need to get a new concealer brush since I already have one (ok, two) similar. However, if I didn't have a brush like this, the #20 brush would be at the top of my to-get list. As for the Invisible Cover Concealer... it's currently holding the first place spot.

  2. I sort of like natural materials better, even though they are more 'work'! As long as it blends the same, for some reason, I just think they're better for your skin! lol.

    1. Hey Carsla. I totally agree. I have all natural brushes (including the one pictured above) but now I understand why synthetics are so popular.

  3. I love Sephora! I am in love with the Tarte line of cosmetics, especially their Amazonian clay foundation. As soon as I have an extra $40, it's going towards that! I will definitely have to try the synthetic brushes. Mine are all natural and I hate how long it takes to dry them! My other problem is that I can't get my foundation brush totally clean. I use a liquid foundation and it seems to just stay in there forever. Any tips?

    1. Sorry Alison, I have no tips for cleaning your brush. The only tip that I can give is to try and concentrate the makeup on the tips only. Once the makeup works it's way deep into the brush, it's terribly hard to get out. :)
